Pre-flight preparations

Selecting seats

After booking your ticket, you may select seats up until 20 minutes before your flight's scheduled departure time.

  • Passengers traveling with children between 8 days and 2 years old cannot sit in exit rows for safety reasons.
  • If you are traveling with 2 children between 8 days and 2 years old and desire adjacent seats, please select "Preferred Seats for Passengers with 2 Children."
  • Eligible seats may be restricted to certain fare types.
  • Aircraft types are subject to change without prior notice.
Child Icons during seat selection

Passengers traveling with children between 8 days and 2 years old who select their seats on the JAL website will have a child icon displayed on their seats on the seat selection screen. This lets other passengers know a child may be sitting there.

  • Child icons are not displayed in the following situations:
  • Seats booked as part of a tour or using award tickets
  • Seats selected through means other than the JAL website

Child icons may not be displayed correctly if there is a change in aircraft.

Borrowing a child seat

Child seats are available to borrow free of charge for children between 8 days and 2 years old who have a reserved seat. Please contact the JAL Smile Support Desk at least 3 days before departure to reserve a child seat.

  • Depending on circumstances, requests may be accepted until 17:00 on the day before departure; please contact us to inquire.

Bringing a child seat aboard

Passengers may bring their own child seats aboard the aircraft if the seats meet JAL's specifications and passengers are able install them in the aircraft seats themselves.

  • Please note that even if a seat can be installed, it may not be allowed onboard if judged to be unsafe when installed.

Please contact the JAL Smile Support Desk at least 3 days before departure if you wish to bring a child seat aboard.

  • Depending on circumstances, requests may be accepted until 17:00 on the day before departure; please contact us to inquire.

Checking a child seat as baggage

no reservation required

No reservation is required if you wish to check a child seat as baggage instead of bringing it aboard. We will gladly check it free of charge.

At departing airport

If you wish to borrow a stroller or have reserved a child seat, please stop by the Smile Support Counter at the departure airport.

  • Please arrive at the counter as early as possible, as airport congestion may affect processing time.

Baby stroller rental service

Strollers are available for your use inside the airport.

If you wish to use one at the arrival airport, please inquire with a JAL staff member at the departure airport.

  • We may not be able to accommodate all requests as supplies are limited.
  • We will also gladly accept your own stroller as checked baggage free of charge.

Pre-boarding service

During boarding, you will have priority to get on board. Please inform our staff at the boarding gate.

In-flight

Let us help you with fixing baby’s milk

Hot water and 100% fruit juice (apple juice) are available.

  • Please bring your own baby powdered milk.
  • Hot water is not available on some aircraft.

Lavatories with diaper changing tables available

Most aircraft have restrooms equipped with diaper-changing tables. Diapers can also be furnished upon request (M/L size).

Baby blanket rental

Soft blankets, exclusively for babies, are available. (Limited numbers available onboard.)

  • Soft brankets are not available on some aircraft.

Inflight entertainment

We provide programming geared towards children through our free Wi-Fi video service. Picture books are also available to borrow.

Assistance on board the aircraft

Our cabin crew members will be happy to assist you with any difficulties or requests you may have onboard the aircraft.

Cabin furnishings are equipped with aircraft configurated items.

Depending on the child's age and the type of seat used, a ticket purchase may be required.

  • One adult may accompany up to two children between 8 days and 2 years old, of whom only 1 may travel without ticket purchase (in the adult's lap).
