Involuntary reservation changes and ticket refunds

Involuntary(*1) reservation changes and ticket refunds for delayed or cancelled flights may be requested via the JAL call center (International Reservation and Information) or at a city/airport counter. Conditions and procedures for JAL Group flights(*2) are described below. For delayed and cancelled flights operated by other carriers, please inquire separately.

  1. "Involuntary" refers to delays/cancellations due to the following reasons:
    Typhoons, snow, earthquakes, airport closures, and other causes beyond JAL's control, as well as resulting aircraft changes
    Aircraft changes required by JAL
    JAL aircraft malfunction
  2. "JAL Group flights" refers to all flights (for international tickets, all ticketable flights) on the following carriers:
    International: Japan Airlines (JL)
    Domestic: Japan Airlines (JL), Japan Transocean Air (NU)

Reservation change

Reservation change refers to changing flight within the same sector.

(Example: JL043 flight on January 15 from Tokyo Haneda to London is canceled due to heavy snow, and is changed to JL043 flight on January 16 from Tokyo Haneda to London.)

Eligible tickets

  • JAL international tickets (tickets issued by JAL with numbers beginning in 131) that include a reservation on a delayed or cancelled JAL Group flight.
  • Non-JAL international tickets that include a reservation on a delayed or cancelled JAL Group flight (delayed/cancelled JAL Group segment only).
  • For JAL award tickets issued by other carriers, please contact the corresponding mileage program.

How change is made

  • The reservation will be changed to an alternate JAL Group flight or flights with open seats.
  • However, JAL may authorize changes to other carriers' flights in some cases.
  • If the change results in extra costs in fare, charges, taxes, or miles above the purchase price, you do not have to pay the difference.

For delayed and cancelled flights operated by other carriers, please inquire separately.

Route change

Eligible tickets

  • JAL international tickets (tickets issued by JAL with numbers beginning in 131) that include a reservation on a delayed or cancelled JAL Group flight.
  • Non-JAL international tickets that include a reservation on a delayed or cancelled JAL Group flight (delayed/cancelled JAL Group segment only).
  • For JAL award tickets issued by other carriers, please contact the corresponding mileage program.

How change is made

  • The route will be changed to an alternate JAL Group flight or flights with open seats flying to the original destination of the delayed/cancelled JAL Group flight.
  • However, if no JAL Group-only routes to the original destination are available, or in some cases JAL authorize, the routes can be changed and include other carriers' flights.

Involuntary ticket refunds

If you wish to cancel a trip due to the delay or cancellation of JAL Group flights, we will refund the unused segment of your ticket.

  • JAL international tickets (tickets issued by JAL with numbers beginning in 131) that include a delayed or cancelled JAL Group flight.
  • For JAL award tickets issued by other carriers, please contact the corresponding mileage program.

From a travel agent Please contact the travel agent where the ticket was purchased.
  • If the ticket was purchased using a restricted currency, refund outside the country of purchase may not be available.

Refund application period

Before start of travel: Within 1 year and 30 days of the ticket issue date

After start of travel: Within 1 year and 30 days of the travel start date

Refund amount/miles

Before start of travel: The full fare, charges, taxes, miles, etc. paid

After start of travel: The fare*, charges, taxes, miles, etc. for unused sectors. 

 

Ticket Service Fees are not refundable.

  • Used sectors' equivalent fare amount will be calculated in proportion of the distance using TPM (sector distance used for fare calculation) of the International Air Transport Association and deducted from the paid amount for refund.

Cancellation/refund charge

No refund charge will apply.
