Involuntary reservation changes and ticket refunds

JAL is handling the refund of ticket or EMD (Electronic Miscellaneous Document) as below.

Tickets/EMDs applicable for refund

JAL International tickets and EMDs (ticket and EMD numbers that begin with 131)

  • *Domestic tickets that begin with 131-14,131-875~9 or Domestic EMDs that begin with 131-553 are excluded.
  • *Please contact the JAL international reservation center or city counter for JAL International tickets reissued by other airlines or other airlines' tickets reissued by JAL.

Refund application period

Ticket

Application at JAL international reservation center or city counter

  • Before commencement of travel: within one year and 30 days from the issue date of the ticket
  • After commencement of travel: within one year and 30 days from the date of travel commencement
  • *When the first sector of the ticket has been changed, within one year and 30 days from the date of change (reissue date)

  • 23:59 on the day before the commencement of travel

Refundable amount

Ticket

Before commencement of travel:
The amount calculated by subtracting the cancellation charge (when set in the fare rule) from the paid fare and taxes/fees/charges etc.
may be refunded.

After commencement of travel:
The amount calculated by subtracting the cancellation charge (when set in the fare rule) from the difference between the paid fare and the fare applicable to the sectors onboard, along with unused taxes/fees/charges etc. may be refunded.

  • *There may be fares that are non-refundable according to fare rules. In such case, only unused taxes/fees/charges etc. may be refunded.
  • *There may be no refundable amount left as a result of refund fare calculation.
  • *Depending on payment method at the time of purchase, there may be amount not eligible for refund.
  • *Ticket Service Fee collected upon purchase or change of ticket may not be refunded.
EMD

Unused fees/charges and refund amount as a result of ticket change may be refunded.

  • *Depending on the payment method at the time of purchase, the EMD may not be eligible for refund.

Processing time required for refund

Purchase by credit card

Refund will be made to the credit card account deducted at the time of purchase through the credit card company. The period of refund may differ depending on the acceptance date of refund, invoice closing date of the credit card company and the timing of refund processing, and may take approximately one to two months.
In addition, there may be situations where refund with handling charges subtracted is made after the entire amount is once deducted or where deduction and refund is carried out simultaneously and only the handling charge is deducted. For details, contact each credit card company.

Purchase by cash

Refund will be made to the designated bank account within approximately 2weeks after the refund application (bank transfer fee are at customer expense).

  • *As a general rule, bank transfer will be made to the account of the name of the passenger on the ticket to be refunded.
  • *There may be cases in which additional time may be required such as when adjustments with other airlines are needed.
