The Hawaiian word for the area or tract of land where the Hawaiian people lived together and where the alii chief collected taxes (payment in kind), is used to describe the entire area from the top of the mountain to the flat land at the seashore. It is easy to imagine the shape of a round island, cut along the peaks like a pizza. The small river that collected the clear water that cascaded down from the mountains would moisten the land and produce crops, the water from the river would be used to grow kalo taro in the loʻi, and the abundant maiʻa bananas would grow around the fields and ponds to enrich the livelihood of the people. On the seashore, heʻe octopuses, ʻōpae sea urchins, iʻa fish, limu seaweed, and the like, are caught, and shallow loko iʻa pools are built by building bricks in the shallows where river water and sea water mix, and using the difference in tidal range, mākāhā weirs are opened and closed to raise small sea creatures in large ponds. This method of raising fish in fishponds is unique to Hawaiʻi among the Polynesian islands. Fishermen then paddle out of the reef in outrigger canoes and use large hooks to catch fish and sharks. Under the supervision of a lower level alii, the konohiki, the harvest of the mountains and sea is distributed within this area. This is a system that has been established by people's lives, who lived entirely within a single ahupuaʻa.
