Important Notice: Canada Implements Temporary Ebola Border Measures

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has introduced temporary border measures due to Ebola. Please note these changes if you plan to travel to Canada or apply for a visa.

  • Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
  • Uganda
  • South Sudan

2. Overview of Measures

1. Temporary Suspension of Visa Validity and Applications

Timeline: For 90 days from May 27 at 23:59 (EDT)

Impact: All immigration documents (Visas, eTA, etc.) for residents of the target countries are temporarily suspended. Travel to Canada is barred even with a valid visa. New applications and processing are also frozen during this period.

2. Mandatory 21-Day Quarantine

Timeline: From May 30 at 23:59 (EDT) until August 29, 2026

Who it applies to: Symptom-free travelers who visited the affected countries within 21 days before arriving in Canada.

Impact: A 21-day quarantine is mandatory after entry.

(Travelers with symptoms at the border will be hospitalized and tested under the Quarantine Act.)

3. Exemptions & Policy Notes

Already in Canada: Travelers currently in Canada are not affected and can stay until their authorized period ends.

 

Canadian Citizens & Permanent Residents: Returning citizens and permanent residents are allowed entry, but must undergo CBSA screening and the 21-day quarantine.
