Prohibition on Unauthorized Import of Satellite Phones and Dedicated GPS Devices into India
In India, it is prohibited by law to possess or use satellite phones and dedicated GPS devices within the country without prior authorization.
When bringing such devices from abroad, travelers must obtain permission in advance from the Ministry of Communications and declare the devices at customs upon entry. (Declaration is required even if the devices will not be used in India.)
Unauthorized possession of GPS devices may be subject to police investigation and legal penalties (including fines and confiscation of the devices), not only at the time of entry but also during domestic flight transfers and upon exit from India.
There have been numerous incidents involving troubles during airport security checks, as well as cases where departure was temporarily blocked due to possession of unauthorized devices and subsequent imposition of fines or other legal actions.
Please take extra caution if you plan to travel to India.
