Travel Alert - Information regarding the Novel Coronavirus (Last Updated April 1, 2020)

JAL group has adopted a range of necessary precautions against the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus in order to maintain a safe, secured environment for our customers, flight/cabin crews, and other employees.

As such to the followings for more information related to the Coronavirus situation.

Air Quality of Aircraft Cabin

Through the engine of an aircraft, the inside of a cabin receives ventilation through outside air every two to three minutes. In addition, each aircraft on JAL's fleet is installed with a HEPA system* to maintain the cabin`s air purity levels.

  • High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter – Designed to capture at least 99.97 percent of fine airborne particles larger than at least 0.3 micrometer.

Airport Staff to Wear Face Masks

As a precautionary measure, airport staff may wear face masks during operating hours.

Cabin Crew to Wear Face Masks and Gloves

As a precautionary measure, cabin crew will wear face masks on international and domestic flights.

They will also wear gloves when serving meals and beverages.

Inflight Announcement

On January 24, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare provided a directive for airlines to inform passengers on applicable flights to report any symptoms, such as coughing and/or fever, to the quarantine officer stationed at the airport.

Applicable Routes: Japan - Beijing, Dalian, Tianjin, Shanghai (Hongqiao/Pudong), Guangzhou, Hong Kong

Disinfection of Aircraft Cabin

Aircraft operating to airports listed below are disinfected during the overnight hours in japan. Applicable areas include seat tables, arm rests, IFE monitors/controllers, lavatories (including door knob, sinks) and/or any areas where customers may touch during a flight. Due to aircraft rotation requirements, this action may not be performed after each flight.

Domestic Flights

First Class

We will temporarily provide packaged wet paper towels.

Class J and Economy Class

We will temporarily stop the blanket and pillow service.
We will temporarily serve cartoned tea for the drink service. Apple juice are prepared for children.

International Flights

All classes

We will temporarily provide packaged wet paper towels.

First and Business Class

We will temporarily stop the magazine service from March 28th.

Inflight meal service for flights to Dalian

With strong request from the Dalian government, we will stop serving inflight meals from March 18, 2020 for flights departing to Dalian (JL827).

Inflight meal service for flights from Manila

With temporary shutdown of the catering company in Manila, we will change the menu of inflight meals from April 3, 2020.

Lounge Service about Meal and Drink

Due to Coronavirus spread, the food and drink service provided at our lounge will be changed as below.

Restriction on Entry to Japan

The following customers will not be able to enter Japan for the time being because the Ministry of Justice has added a landing refusal.

  • Foreigners who have Chinese passports issued by Hubei Province or Zhejiang Province in the People's Republic of China.
  • Any non-Japanese passport holders who boarded on the MS Westerdam departed from Hong Kong
  • Foreigners who have stayed in following cities/provinces/regions within 14 days prior to your arrival in Japan.

  2. Republic of Korea:Daegu-guangyeok-si, or Gyeongsan-si, Andong-si, Yeongcheon-si, Cheondo-gun, Chilgok-gun, Uiseong-gun, Seongju-gun, Gunwi-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do

Strengthening the quarantine when entering Japan

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare asks to take below actions before and after entering Japan for those who stayed in the "quarantine strengthening target area (* 1)" since when the areas were announced by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, or those who have stayed in the "entry restricted area (* 2)" in the past 14 days from the entry to Japan.

  • Even if your health condition is good, you will be asked to isolate for 14-days from the day of entering Japan at the place designated by the quarantine director (such as home), and not to use the public transportation, including transportation from airports.
  • With this reason, before entering Japan you will need to secure a place to stay for 14 days and the private transportation to the place.
  • When entering Japan, the quarantine officer will register your quarantine place and your transportation from the airport.

Also, for those, who have stayed in the entry restricted area announced by Japan government in the past 14 days fron the entry to Japan, will need to take PCR testing upon arrival and will need to take periodic medical checks by health agencies.

Quarantine measures strengthened at the airports outside of Japan

International airports have strengthened their quarantine measures and may mandate health check (e.g. fever, cough, and breathing difficulties) upon arrival at the airport.

Also, there are countries that require travelers to stay at the location specified by the Quarantine or restrict activities such as transportation and accommodation use.

Measures of visa restrictions due to strengthen border measures in Japan

Starting from 0:00am(jst) march 9, all efficacy of single or multiple-entry visa issued by March 8th at Japanese Embassies or Consulates General in China or the Republic of Korea are suspended.
Visa exemption measures for Hong Kong and Macau, and the Republic of Korea are suspended.

Starting from 0:00AM (JST) March 21, all efficacy of single or  multiple entry visas issued by March 20 at Japanese Embassies or Consulates  in all areas of the Schengen member states* or Ireland, Andora, Iran, United Kingdom, Egypt, Cyprus, Croatia, San Marino, the Vatican, Bulgaria, Monaco or Romania are terminated and visa exemption measures are suspended.

  • Iceland, Italy, Estonia, Austria, Holland, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Hungary, Finland, France, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Marta, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg

Starting from 0:00AM (JST) March 28, all efficacy of single or multiple entry visas issued by March 27 at Japanese Embassies or consulates in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Israel, Qatar, Democratic Republic of the Congo or Bahrain will be terminated and visa exemption measures will be suspended.

Restrictions on entry conditions to countries other than Japan

Each country updates its restriction of entry to its country or quarantine measures from day to day due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus.
There have been reports of passengers not been able to enter a country or denied boarding by other airlines at the connecting airport despite having the travel documents that are usually acceptable for entry.
Customers are advised to check the relevant information from embassies, consulates, and health ornagizations of the destination country.

 

On selected routes, web check-in and use of KIOSK check-in machines at airport may be suspeneded for this reason.

Ticket handling due to Immigration restrictions

Passengers who have received immigration restrictions at the departing or arrival airport, JAL International tickets may be changed or refunded, regardless of the fare rules and without any charge.

  • If you have purchased your tickets at places other than JAL such as travel agents, please contact the place where your purchased.
    If you are departing from now, please refer to ”Special handling for JAL international tickets following the situation of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus.”

Restrictions of carrying Disinfectant products in checked and carry-on baggage

Disinfectant products below are prohibited in checked and carry-on baggage as dangerous goods.

Products

「Disinfectant products which causes Corrosive material ( Sodium Chlorite Solution)」

Products which accompanying powder materials need to be mixed or which need to be bended to complex ingredients and causes Corrosive materials (Sodium Chlorite Solution)

Example) Cleverin Stand-alone Type, Cleverin Stick Pen Type,

Cleverin Stick Hook Type, and other similar products

 

  • Disinfectants products such as Gel Type products which is for hands or skin is not prohibited in checked and carry-on baggage.

There are no restrictions in place for other types of disinfectant products at present, but this may change going forward.
