Asahikawa is the second largest city in Hokkaido. It is a city where city and nature are in harmony and plays a central role in northern Hokkaido as a logistics and tourism hub. Every February, Asahikawa’s winter festival features massive snow sculptures and ice art.

The area is also ideal for adventurers who want to enjoy the outdoors, as it is surrounded by the Daisetsuzan Mountains, which are 2,000-meter-high peaks and are known as the "roof of Hokkaido”. You’ll find more than eight ski resorts within an hour and a half drive of Asahikawa City and Asahikawa Airport. Hokkaido experiences significant snowfall from late November to February, and peak ski season happens from mid-December to early February. Some ski resorts may be open until April or early May, depending on the location. The ski areas of Kamui, Furano, Kurodake, and Tomamu are collectively known as the "Hokkaido Powder Belt" and offer some of the best powder snow in the world. Furano Ski Resort lies south of Asahikawa City. It’s an attractive resort with various courses for beginner and advanced skiers. Between the premium snow conditions and breathtaking scenery, Furano is a favorite among local and international skiing enthusiasts.

Furano’s snow is fluffy, smooth, and soft. Branded as bonchi powder, it is said to be of excellent quality, even by global standards.  The snow creates a perfect playground for winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, and is a paradise for those who love soft, powdery snow. The best time to enjoy the snow is first thing in the morning–after the soft powder snow has fallen overnight and the tracks are fresh.

This Furano ski resort has 28 courses, with the longest run at 4,000 meters. The resort has two areas - the “Furano Zone” and the “Kitanomine Zone".

The Furano Zone is better suited for intermediate to advanced skiers as it has steeper slopes and more challenging terrain. If you are looking for a more exhilarating skiing experience or off-piste areas, this zone is for you.

On the other hand, the northern peak zone is best suited for beginners and intermediate skiers. There are many family-friendly slopes, ideal for first-time skiers and snowboarders, and the panoramic view of the Tokachi and Daisetsuzan mountain ranges from the top of the mountain is breathtaking. How to get to Furano Ski Resort: From Asahikawa Airport, take the Furano Bus "Lavender-go" to the New Furano Prince Hotel. After getting off the bus, it takes about 3 minutes on foot to reach the ski resort.

Kurodake Ski Resort, located in Daisetsuzan National Park, is one of Hokkaido’s representative mountain ski resorts. It is situated near Sounkyo Onsen and is renowned for its steep terrain and powder-like snow. The resort is a great favorite among many advanced and expert skiers.

The area above the seventh station is a backcountry ski area. From the top of the mountain, you can enjoy open slopes in natural terrain to the fullest. However, please be sure to bring the necessary equipment. The terrain includes steep, cliff-riddled runs and off-piste areas that require caution and experience.

On the course runs, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Daisetsuzan mountain range. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains in the distance. Because of its location at a high altitude, visitors can enjoy powder snow from the time the resort opens in mid-November. If you have skied the more difficult courses, you will enjoy the Kurodake course as well.

After a day of skiing, you can relax at the Sounkyo Onsen. Located in the Daisetsuzan National Park at the foot of the Daisetsuzan Sounkyo Kurodake ropeway, this scenic hot spring area boasts towering cliff gorges and beautiful waterfalls. It is a popular spot for those who want to relax and enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking.

The Asahidake Ropeway is a cable car system within Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido. Snowshoeing is recommended to enjoy the abundant snowfall and beautiful scenery using the Asahidake ropeway. Snowshoeing is a great way for both beginners and experienced snowshoers to enjoy the deep white world.

Most tours begin at the Sugatami station, which can be reached by the Asahidake ropeway. Snowshoeing tours are conducted by guides who provide equipment rental and safety instructions. The guides know the local terrain well and add to the tour with their insight into the area, making it a safe and enjoyable snowshoeing experience.

Most tours last around two to four hours, depending on the itinerary and group preference. The snowshoeing experience takes you through pristine snowfields and lets you enjoy breathtaking views from the surrounding mountains. You’ll see many snow-covered trees and fumaroles - openings on the earth's surface that emit steam and gasses. Occasionally, you may catch glimpses of wildlife.

If the weather is clear, you’ll see stunning vistas of Mount Asahidake and the Daisetsuzan National Park. The views from the mountainside and town side are sights that you shouldn’t miss.

How to get to Asahidake Ropeway: From Asahikawa Airport, take the Asahikawa Airport/Asahidake Line “Ideyu-go” bus for about an hour and get off at the Asahidake Ropeway.

Kitoushi Forest is located near the Canmore Ski Village and is fully equipped with long-stay cabins.  You can also try various experiences, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and observing the country’s wildlife.

Nearby is a hot springs facility designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Using groundwater rich in minerals from the Daisetsuzan mountain range, visitors can enjoy a luxurious time to heal body and soul. Finnish saunas with different themes are also recommended. 

Canmore Ski Village is considered a "local hole-in-the-wall" among Hokkaido's ski resorts and is less crowded than larger ski resorts. Canmore Ski Village also has a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy winter sports without the crowds. While it does not have the expansive terrain or advanced runs of the larger resorts, the powder snow first thing in the morning is well worth the experience. The atmosphere is welcoming and inviting, making for a fun and friendly ski experience.

Nayoro Pyashiri Ski Resort has a tree run area with a length of approximately 1,400 meters. This is one of the longest tree-run areas in Hokkaido, and visitors can enjoy the finest powder snow.

The resort features dining facilities where you can order local cuisine during a break from the slopes. You can also rent their on-site equipment if you didn't bring your gear. Hyuga Ski Resort, or Hinata Ski Area, is located in Shibetsu City, Hokkaido, about an hour from Asahikawa City. It’s a popular ski location with various slopes catering primarily to beginners and intermediate skiers.

Although smaller than neighboring ski resorts, it offers various courses for skiing and snowboarding. Whether you’re a novice skier or a  more experienced one, you’ll find some courses to improve your skiing skills.

If the weather in the Asahikawa area is bad, we recommend changing your plans and skiing at Hyuga Ski Resort. Depending on the snowfall on the previous day, you can enjoy deep powder in the course first thing in the morning. 

After a full day of skiing, go home and enjoy "Shibetsu Suffolk Lamb," one of the Shibetsu brands. 

Hinata Ski Area is the perfect destination if you’re looking for a place to enjoy a winter ski without the crowds typically found in large resorts. It’s easy to get to and offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere for families and beginner skiers.
