Descend underground at the Akiyoshido Undisclosed Area

Descend underground at the Akiyoshido Undisclosed Area

Yamaguchi’s enchanting landscapes leave visitors with lasting memories. Yet one of its most famous attractions is actually underground. Akiyoshi Cave, one of Japan’s largest limestone caves with a total length of over 11.2 kilometers, is designated as a Special Natural Monument by the Japanese government.

The standard tourist route is approximately 1 kilometer long. The temperature inside remains constant at 17°C throughout the year, making it feel cool in summer and warm in winter. The paths are paved and well-lit, allowing visitors to safely and comfortably explore the vast cave.

Highlights inside the cave include the "Hyakumai-zara" (Hundred Plates), resembling terraced rice fields, and the massive "Kogane-bashira" (Golden Pillar), which stands 4 meters wide and 15 meters tall. Enjoy exploring the mysterious subterranean spaces formed by moving water over countless years.

For those seeking more adventure, there is an undeveloped and unlit course leading to the underground river deep within the cave—the restricted area of Akiyoshi Cave—where you can observe rare rock formations shaped over millennia.

With help from a trained caving team, groups of up to six people can join guided tours that last between two and four hours. These tours travel through rocky, hard-to-reach areas of the cave. Visitors can choose a course that matches their comfort level, with options available for both beginners and experienced explorers.

Ride Segways and tuk-tuks amid ancient landscapes

Ride Segways and tuk-tuks amid ancient landscapes

Travelers can't miss exploring Akiyoshidai, Japan’s largest karst plateau, which stretches across Mine City. The limestone that shapes the magnificent scenery of Akiyoshidai was originally formed as coral reefs approximately 350 million years ago. Over an immense span of time, these rocks gradually developed into the current karst plateau, dotted with unique rock formations.

Akiyoshidai was designated as a Quasi-National Park in 1955 and as a Special Natural Monument in 1964. It has also been proposed for registration as a UNESCO Global Geopark, with formal recognition expected in the spring of 2026. This title is given to important geological sites that focus on conservation, sustainability, and education.

Here, you can walk or rent a bike to explore the area, but there are other ways to see the grasslands, too. For example, you can join 90-minute Segway tours that run in the morning and afternoon. Visitors can also ride in a Tuk-Tuk. These comfortable, seven-seat vehicles let you enjoy the white limestone scenery and rolling hills without having to spend the whole day walking.

Bathe in a 600-year-old hot spring at Nagato Yumoto Onsen

Along the "Otozure River" in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, stands "Onto," a public bathhouse in Nagato Yumoto Onsen—the oldest hot spring in the prefecture with a proud 600-year history. Once operated as a public municipal facility, "Onto" was rebuilt by the locals in response to aging infrastructure and declining visitor numbers, and underwent a major renovation in March 2020. Today, "Onto" blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comfort, allowing guests to soak in natural hot springs while enjoying stunning scenery.

The onsen’s mildly alkaline water, which springs from underground bedrock, is gentle on the skin and maintains a pleasant temperature of about 39°C. Its moderate warmth lets visitors relax and soak for extended periods, providing a calm and comfortable experience to refresh both body and mind.

Learn the craft of Hagi pottery, a 400-year-old ceramics tradition

Learn the craft of Hagi pottery, a 400-year-old ceramics tradition

Hagi ware is a type of pottery produced mainly in the area around Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, with about 400 years of tradition. Its origins date back to the early Edo period, when the Mōri clan invited potters from the Korean Peninsula to Hagi. Hagi ware is characterized by the use of iron-rich clay, giving it a slightly rough yet warm and gentle texture. Another unique aspect is known as "Hagi no Nanabake" (the Seven Transformations of Hagi), referring to how the color of tea bowls and other wares deepens and changes over time with repeated use, enhancing their distinctive beauty.

A recommended kiln in Hagi City is "Toubou Taikeian Higuchi Kiln," located near Shouin Shrine and Shoukasonjuku Academy. In this tranquil workshop, you can experience making sake cups and teacups using an electric potter’s wheel, guided by a traditional Hagi ware craftsman. For an additional fee, finished works can also be shipped abroad via EMS (Express Mail Service).
