Yamaguchi’s enchanting landscapes leave visitors with lasting memories. Yet one of its most famous attractions is actually underground. Akiyoshi Cave, one of Japan’s largest limestone caves with a total length of over 11.2 kilometers, is designated as a Special Natural Monument by the Japanese government.
The standard tourist route is approximately 1 kilometer long. The temperature inside remains constant at 17°C throughout the year, making it feel cool in summer and warm in winter. The paths are paved and well-lit, allowing visitors to safely and comfortably explore the vast cave.
Highlights inside the cave include the "Hyakumai-zara" (Hundred Plates), resembling terraced rice fields, and the massive "Kogane-bashira" (Golden Pillar), which stands 4 meters wide and 15 meters tall. Enjoy exploring the mysterious subterranean spaces formed by moving water over countless years.
For those seeking more adventure, there is an undeveloped and unlit course leading to the underground river deep within the cave—the restricted area of Akiyoshi Cave—where you can observe rare rock formations shaped over millennia.
With help from a trained caving team, groups of up to six people can join guided tours that last between two and four hours. These tours travel through rocky, hard-to-reach areas of the cave. Visitors can choose a course that matches their comfort level, with options available for both beginners and experienced explorers.
