| JAL opens new route to Xiamen (Amoy) Expanding Japan-China network |
| May 30, 2002 Japan Airlines will inaugurate its newest service to China on June 2, when it begins operating three roundtrips a week between Tokyo and Xiamen, China, increasing the number of Chinese cities served by JAL to seven. JAL's first flight to China was in October 1972, when a JAL aircraft was chartered to pick up a giant panda; scheduled service began two years later. This year is the 30th anniversary of formalized relations between China and Japan, and after the April 18 opening of a second runway at Narita Airport, JAL's services between the two countries have taken a great leap forward with expansion on existing routes and the opening of new routes. JAL now offers flights to China from six cities in Japan: Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Okinawa. Destinations in JAL's 17-route China network are Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Qingdao, Dalian, Tianjin and Xiamen. After October 2002 and the completion of the first phase of the JAL/Japan Air System merger, the extended new Japan Airlines Group China network will include three additional cities now served by Japan Air System from Tokyo: Kunming, Guangzhou and Xian. The new flights between Narita and Xiamen will operate on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with 767 aircraft. The outbound flight from Japan, JL607, will cover the 1,500-mile route in 4 hours, 55 minutes; the return, JL608, will take 3 hours, 35 minutes. |
