Fares linked to estimated number of available seats

Fare amounts for a given fare will vary based on the estimated number of available seats at the time of booking and the number of passengers included in the booking. The “estimated number of available seats” is a projection as of the time of booking of how full a given flight and class will end up being. (It is different from the number of empty seats available at the time of booking.)

Expansion of transfer fares

Sectors will now be defined in terms of travel between a single departure point and a single arrival point, regardless of how many transfers and flights are involved.

This will make more fare lineups available for segments that are not served by direct flights, as well as make fare amounts for indirect flights roughly equal to direct flights.

If you add, change, or cancel flights within a sector, you will need to check seat availability again and rebook under a new sector covering the origin to the destination. (If a flight in the new sector has no more seats available, you will not be able to make changes using your original booking even if the flight is the same as before the change.)

Ticket purchase deadline

Ticket purchase deadlines will change as follows.

  • If the fare’s booking deadline falls before the purchase deadline, the fare’s booking deadline serves as the purchase deadline.

[For flights departing on/before April 11, 2023]

Within three days, including the booking date

[For flights departing on/after April 12, 2023]

There are three levels of ticket purchase deadline, determined by the booking date/time and the flight departure time.

Time of booking Purchase deadline
More than 120 hours before departure 72 hours after booking
From 120 hours to 72 hours before departure 48 hours after booking
From 72 hours to 20 minutes before departure 24 hours* after booking
  • If the flight departs within 24 hours of booking, the purchase deadline is 20 minutes before departure.

How applicable fare amounts are determined

The departure date specified when the ticket was purchased will be used to determine the applicable fare amount.

If you change your booking, the applicable fare amount for the newly booked flight(s) as of the time of the change will apply.

If this results in a higher fare amount, you will need to pay the difference as an additional charge. If it results in a lower fare amount, the difference will be refunded to you.

(Example)

On June 10, you book and purchase a seat on JAL flight 308 departing August 10 (Flex: JPY 33,000)

On June 15, you change your flight from JAL 308 to JAL 310 (Flex: JPY 35,000)

Because the applicable fare amount for the newly booked flight is JPY 35,000 as of the date of the change, you will be charged a difference of JPY 2,000.

Fare expiration date

Tickets purchased under current fare types are valid only until April 11, 2023.

If you do not plan to use a ticket by April 11, 2023, please request a refund.

Please note that tickets with fares that have expired will not be automatically refunded; you must contact us to request a refund.

Discontinuation of open tickets

Open tickets (tickets that can be purchased without booking flights, specifying only the planned travel segments) will be discontinued.

Beginning April 12, 2023, you will not be able to use already-issued open tickets or convert other ticket types to open tickets.

Any tickets purchased under current fare types must be used by the end of the ticket’s validity period or the expiration date for current fares, whichever comes first. If you do not plan to do so, please request a refund.

A cancellation charge will apply to refunds. (Refunds will not be automatically issued for tickets that expire. Please be sure to contact us.)

  • A cancellation charge will apply to the refund, except in cases where the flight is expected to be delayed, cancelled, or otherwise disrupted.
  • The new fares will be available for flights departing on/after April 12, 2023. They will not be available for flights departing on/before April 11, 2023.

Discontinuation of order numbers

Order numbers (8 digit alphanumeric or 12 digit numeric codes) will be discontinued as a form of authentication.

For flights departing on/after April 12, 2023, ticket numbers will serve as authentication codes in place of order numbers.

Ticket number notifications

Ticket numbers - which serve as one type of authentication code required for boarding - will be sent by email or text message.
