Relaxed border controls for entering Japan starting March, 2022 (As of March 4, 2022)

Staring March 1, 2022, Japan has relaxed its border measures. Please be informed of the changes in quarantine period and use of public transport.

1. Quarantine after entry

Quarantine location and period varies depending on the countries/regions you have stayed in, and whether you have received three COVID-19 vaccinations or not.

Vaccination Quarantine after arrival
Passengers who have stayed in the designated countries/regions Not fully vaccinated 3-day quarantine at a designated facility and a negative test result at the facility required. If the results are negative, no further quarantine is needed.
Vaccinated 3 times and holding a valid vaccination certificate 3-day home quarantine and a negative result from a self-administered test is required. 7-day home quarantine is required if you are not taking a test.
Passengers who have not stayed in the designated countries/regions Not fully vaccinated 3-day home quarantine and a negative result from a self-administered test is required. 7-day home quarantine is required if you are not taking a test.
Vaccinated 3 times and holding a valid vaccination certificate Quarantine not required

Customers who have stayed in the following countries/regions are required to quarantine at a facility designated by the chief of the quarantine station

2. Use of public transport after entry

Public transport, including domestic flights, may be used to your own residence or accommodation for self-isolation. However, travel must be completed within 24 hours counting from the time your PCR test was taken when you entered the country. You must use the most direct route possible. When using public transport, please take thorough precautions to prevent infection, such as wearing a mask, disinfecting your hands, avoiding enclosed spaces and maintaining social distance.

3. New entry by foreign nationals

New entry by foreign nationals into Japan is now permitted under the supervision of the organization in Japan taking responsibility for the person while they are in the country. Entry for tourism purposes is not permitted.
