Yufuin/Kinrinko Lake

A lovely lake veiled in mists

Kinrinko is a rare lake that has both hot and cold springs welling up from its bottom. It looks absolutely enchanting when viewed in the winter early in the morning, while enveloped in mists. It reportedly got its name from Mori Kuso, a Confucian scholar around the middle of the 19th century, who spotted a fish with scales that glittered like gold swimming in its waters at sunset. There are plenty of Yufuin spas around the neighborhood.
