Kobe Luminarie was held for the first time in December 1995 as a tribute to the victims of the Great Hanshin and Awaji Earthquakes of 1995, and to express hope for the speedy restoration of the cities. It has been held each year since to pass down the memory and lessons from the disasters and as a symbol of hope for the people of Kobe. The name of the festival was inspired by a lighted baroque-period structure in Italy. Last year, this event attracted an estimated 3.26 million visitors to see the warm and dignified lighting.
