Abeno Harukas

Japan's tallest building supported by state-of-the-art technology

Abeno Harukas is a high-rise complex with 60 floors above ground that rises 300 meters into the sky. Inaugurated in 2014, it broke the Japanese record for tallest building for the first time in 21 years. In September 2016, approximately two and a half years since opening, the cumulative number of visitors topped 100 million, clearly establishing the building as a landmark in Osaka, both in name and in reality. Featuring various facilities including a train station, a department store, museum, offices, hotel, and observation deck, this is more than just a tall building. This is also a building supported by diverse technologies including a world-class earthquake resistant structure and energy-saving facilities that take advantage of the building's height and mixed-use design.

The "Abeno Harukas Exploration Tour" will take you to the backyard area, which is normally closed to the public, and allow you to see the latest building facilities. Looking up from the 17th floor is an open ceiling space that rises as high as 100 meters. Light and wind pass through the building, a design that makes good use of natural energy and realizes energy-saving and CO2 reduction. On the 5th basement floor, you can see the biogas facility that uses the raw garbage generated inside the building. This building constitutes the first attempt at a high-rise building that generating methane gas from raw garbage to produce heat and electricity.

The tour covers also the building's earthquake-resistant and vibration damping structure, which is designed to withstand magnitude 7 earthquakes. You will also be able to learn about the various earthquake resistance mechanisms used in the building, including in the 15th floor machine room, seismic members such as ultra-high-strength pillars and braces, and in the 56th floor machine room, the specially designed pendulum that suppresses the shaking of the upper floors. Many discoveries await you on the back side of Japan's premier building as you peep at things from a different perspective than usual.
