Q16 Can equipment such as CPAP machine be used during the flight?
A16

The CPAP to be used by a passenger must satisfy Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) standards, therefore, please contact a JAL reservation center in advance. Please provide them with the name of the CPAP equipment, model number, manufacturer, and other information. Basically, you will be requested to place battery-operated equipment at your feet. If you use AC electric power type equipment, you may use the PC electric source in the cabin.
There is no need to submit a medical certificate as there are no problems with appropriateness of air travel.

Precautions when using PC electric sources

  1. A PC electric source cannot be used at take-off, landing or when the aircraft is parked on the ground.
  2. A CPAP cannot be used on aircraft types, Classes or seat numbers where a PC electric source is not provided.
  3. For your safety, the electric supply is limited. If you use more than maximum electric power consumption (*2), electric power for the passenger in the adjacent seat may be shut off.
  4. In case of system trouble, or if excess electric power is used, electric supply may shut down without warning.
  5. You may only use AC power adapter sources that can be plugged to the end.
    Only the three shapes of plugs below can be used.

  6. When using a PC electric source, the passenger shall use the CPAP at his/her own risk. We will not accept any liability.
  7. As the PC electric source on board is designed for PCs, it is not designed for medical equipment that require a high quality electric source. Do not connect medical equipment to a PC electric source.
  • *1 Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow during sleep, but it is not life threatening. It can be eased by using CPAP ( = Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) .
  • *2 Use of a PC electric source is limited to equipment using up to 110V/60Hz/maximum electric power consumption 75W.
Q17Can equipment such as Nebulizer(electroactuation) be used during flight?

Any passengers who use a nebulizer (electroactuation) need to follow these safety and operational requirement

  • The nebulizer (electroactuation) must be electro-magnetic compatible with flight apparatus and receive the approval from JAL.
  • Medical clearance is required. If you take your inhaler with you, no medical clearance is required.
  • You will need to use a battery-operated device as there is no facility for operating electric medical equipments.
  • The device and battery should fit underneath the seat and overhead compartment.
  • An escort must accompany passenger.

Q18 Can I transport a baby in an incubator who requires medical treatment in a hospital?

Japan Airlines will not provide transport using an infant incubator. Please carry the baby on your lap while onboard the aircraft.
In some cases, We can provide transport on a stretcher under certain conditions. When using a stretcher, advance arrangements must be made with the relevant medical institution, so please ask your physician to contact our Priority Guest Center as early as possible. Also, a medical certificate specified by JAL and a medical escort by a healthcare professional will be required

Q19 I am allergic to peanuts, so I want to know JAL's measure for passengers with peanut allergies.
A19

The only measure that can be taken by JAL for allergic passenger is to avoid the use of peanuts in in-flight meals, etc. onboard JAL aircraft.

It is absolutely impossible to remove all peanut particles from the aircraft. Any other possible peanut allergies will be handled by removing the nuts from the allergic passenger's meal only.

Q20 Is it possible to buy the adjacent seat for my medical equipment?
A20

It may be possible to purchase an extra seat for medical equipment provided that your equipment is electro-magnetic compatible with flight apparatus and have received the approval from JAL. This will be dependant on the size and weight of the item you wish to carry in the extra seat. It may also be possible to purchase an extra seat for personal comfort. If you would like to inquire about the possibility and cost of an extra seat, please contact the local JAL office. All extra seats will be on request basis only until confirmed by JAL. The second seat may be purchased for the same fare as the original seat The allowance for checked baggage is doubled when two seats are purchased for one passenger.
