A Guide for Passengers with Disabilities (JAL PRIORITY GUEST SUPPORT)

FAQ

List of Questions

Q6 Can I take my battery-powered wheelchair with me?
A6

Your battery-powered wheelchair can be checked at the check-in counter (and/or gate). Please tell us the size and weight of wheelchair and the type of battery. Batteries must be identified as either spillable or non-spillable so we can establish proper dangerous goods handing. If your wheelchair has a spillable battery, it must be disconnected, the terminals protected from short circuit and the wheelchair stowed in an upright position. This normally means removing the battery for stowage. Please note, as battery-operated wheelchairs are not completely collapsible, they cannot always be accommodated on certain small aircraft types.

To ensure that customers' wheelchairs can be used from the door side on arrival, batteries used for battery-operated wheelchairs can be carried into the cabin provided that they have been confirmed not to be dangerous goods.

e.g. YAMAHA JW-I, YAMAHA JW-II, AISIN TAO-LIGHT (PU10)

Q7 Is CAPD equipment permitted in the cabin?
A7

Yes. However, it is not recommended, because a clean area with space and privacy cannot be provided. Please let us know when making your reservation within 3 days before your depar ture. JAL's Medical Information Form (MEDIF) must be submitted. Please see pages 27 for details. When using battery-operated medical equipment, we may ask you to send us a copy of the equipment manual.

An instrument such as an S-hook to hang the bag of dialysis fluid and means to warm the fluid should be arranged by the passenger. In addition, please make arrangements for a room for dialysis at the airport by yourself.

Q8 My child came down with chickenpox one week ago. Can we travel?
A8

Passengers who are suffering from infectious diseases and are in the midst of the school attendance prohibition period by the Japanese School Health Law are not accepted for air travel but may be accepted if the attending physician certifies the passenger is fit for air travel after airline assessment.

A JAL Medical Information Form (MEDIF) should be submitted for these diseases, stating that you are no longer infectious. In case of a passenger who has Rubella, Chickenpox, Meningococcal meningitis, Tuberculosis, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, or Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, a MEDIF will not be necessary on/after the 11th day after onset, although the school attendance prohibition period is not stated in the law.

For details, please see "Medical Information Form (MEDIF)."

Table of the period that a patient is prohibited from attending school by Japanese law
Infectious DiseaseAttendance Prohibition Period
InfluenzaWithin 5days of onset, and 2 days after temperature has dropped (3days in case of child)
Whooping coughUntil the characteristic cough is suppressed, or until 5days treatment with antibiotics is ended.
Measles3 days after his/her temperature has dropped
MumpsWithin 5days of onset of the swelling on submandibular, sublingual and parotid gland, and major symptoms general condition recovered
RubellaUntil the eruption disappears
ChickenpoxUntil all eruption become scabs
Pharyngoconjunctival2 days after the main symptom disappears
Epidemic keratoconjunctivitisUntil a physician or a pediatrician evaluates that the disease becomes non-contageous
Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis
Tuberculosis
Meningococcal meningitis
Q9 For a passenger who cannot sit upright, is it possible to lie down the seat?
A9

You are requested to sit upright in a straight-back seat at the time of take-off and landing. During cruising, you can lie down with additional payment of the next seat. You must fasten the seat belt at all times in case of turbulence.

If a passenger has difficulty sitting in the upright position in the aircraft, but not so much as to use a stretcher, the following measures may be considered:

  • In case of children, a Child Seat can be rented free of charge.

For details, please see "Use of Infant Seat Onboard Aircraft."

  • We provide a Body Support Belt to tie the upper body to the seat.
    * Recommended for passengers who cannot use a child seat due to weight and/or height limitations
  • Carrying aboard privately made supportive devices. Acceptance should be decided depending on its size and installation method. The passenger and device should be tied down together with the seat belt.
Q10 Are there any precautions for passengers with panic disorder?
A10

Persons with panic disorder are continually afraid of having an attack. Panic attacks can occur suddenly and involve anxiety, fear, heart palpitations, chest pains, difficulty breathing, hyperventilation, dizziness, and shakiness. Be sure to consult your family doctor in advance about whether air travel is feasible for you.

If the doctor advises that it is permissible, ask about what you should do in case of a panic attack. Be sure to carry on with you any medication you may need to treat a panic attack. Please let us know your special request for the seat assignment
