JAL Inaugurates Japan's First Boeing 747-400 Freighter

JAL will be the first airline in Japan to inaugurate a Boeing 747-400 freighter ("B744F") on October 25. In addition, JAL plans to introduce 5 B744F's by the end of FY2006 in order to provide stable space for air freight transportation.

B744F

The B744F, which first appeared in 1993, allows maximum allowable load weight of about 110 tons. Compared with the Boeing 747 freighter ("B747F"), currently in service at JAL, the B744F allows 6% greater maximum load weight and 3% roomier cargo compartment space. There are already more than 90 B744F's in operation around the world. What's more the B744F carries a quiet engine, whose specifications will surely meet any noise restrictions in the future.

According to JAL's 2004~06 Medium-Term Business Plan, JAL will introduce 2 new B744F's and 3 B747-400 modified passenger aircraft, bringing the total of B744F's to 5. (One of the modified B744F's is planned to start services from FY2007.) JAL has just concluded an agreement with Boeing on the B747-400 modified passenger aircraft mentioned above, including confirmation of the three B747-400's and also an option of 4 aircraft.

JAL currently owns 10 freighters (all B747F's), and will increase this to 13 by the end of FY2006 (5 B744F's and 8 B747F's) in order to expand transport capacity and accurately meet the growing demand for air transport.
