Recently JAL submitted a patent application for a business model (Note 1) aimed at improving the domestic air cargo business efficiency of airline companies and agencies.
The patent application was made with the goal of creating an opportunity, by obtaining the recognition of public institutions, for the entire industry to consider the potential of information technology for the future of the air cargo business in Japan, and then to implement this information technology.
The objective of this business model, which is premised on the clearing of legal obstacles, is to realize the two items listed below by sharing cargo data among airline companies and their agencies via the Internet (Note 2). The system could then become a springboard for the future development of e-business by the domestic division of JALCARGO.
| 1. |
To promote greater efficiency in all areas including shipment, sales, billing, and revenue management, allowing for electronic settlement of accounts and a paperless system to replace the use of waybills and other printed forms. |
| 2. |
To improve the information infrastructure across the entire industry, and to increase information accuracy, applicability, convenience, and transmission speed. |
| Note 1: |
A business model patent is a patent relating to a new business
structure or method based on IT, and can even be applied to existing businesses.
("Business model patent" is not the formal name used by the Japanese Patent
Office.) |
| Note 2: |
A specific example of this involves installing PCs and printers with Internet access at agencies to enable the exchange and processing of data for shipping, sales, and billing. In particular, the transfer of cargo at departure and destination airports based on electronic shipping data would be possible. |
