Check-in and Boarding Information Baggage Rules

Carry-on Baggage

Each passenger is permitted one piece of carry-on baggage.

A passenger may carry on board one personal belonging, such as a shopping bag or handbag, and one baggage satisfying the conditions below. When travelling on a codeshare flight the operating carrier's baggage policy applies.

As for baggage that exceeds the dimensions, or baggage that cannot be appropriately stowed in the cabin due to space limitations, we may ask the customer at the boarding gate or in the cabin to check-in their baggage for loading inside the cargo compartment. We would appreciate your understanding on this point.

Inside the Cabin

For your own safety and comfort, please stow your Carry-on baggage under the seat or in the overhead compartments properly.

   
  • Baggage that has not been securely placed may cause the injury to you, other passengers or cabin attendants in the event of sudden movement.
  • Baggage scattered in the aisle or emergency exit area may hinder an emergency evacuation.
  • Baggage kept on hand may hinder a passenger from taking a bracing position against impact properly.

Precautions for Using Electronic Devices

The use of electronic devices aboard aircrafts is restricted by Civil Aeronautics Law of Japan as below(as of Oct 1st,2007). Please switch off restricted electronic devices before boarding.
Those who break the law may be subject to fine of up to 500,000 yen. (Civil Aeronautics Law, Enforcement, Article 164-15)
Also, please switch off electronic devices in your checked baggage.

Prohibited at all times Electronic devices that emit electronic signals: cell phones, PHS, transceivers, radio-controlled toys, wireless headphones, wireless earphones, wireless microphones, battery powered IC tags, personal computers(PC), personal digital assistants(PDA), wireless PC peripherals, electronic game machines, wireless pedometers, wireless heart rate monitors, wristwatches with wireless functions, wireless keys.

All of the above-mentioned items even in a non-electronic signals-emitting setting, TVs, radios, pagers, GPS receivers, video cameras, video players, DVD players, digital cameras, digital audio equipment, wired & battery type headphones, wired & battery type earphones, word processors, electronic organizers, electronic dictionaries, printers, battery chargers, toys with voice or touch activated speakers and monitors.

Kids Phone by NTT Docomo (<sup>TM</sup>SA800i) or Junior Phone by au (A5520SAⅡ/A5525SA/Sweets cute) must be turned off completely in advance.

Some airports may employ CT scans for baggage reinspection, in addition to standard X-ray scans. The increased X-ray exposure may affect photographic film. Therefore, it is recommended that you carry your photographic film with you into the cabin with your carry-on baggage.

Checked Baggage

Free Baggage Allowance

Infants flying on an infant fare Each passenger is limited to one piece of checked baggage with a total linear dimension not to exceed 115 cm (45 in.) and one additional item consisting of any of the following: folding infant stroller, portable infant rocking cradle or car seat.

Excess Baggage

For baggage in excess of the free baggage allowance, an excess baggage charge applies under JAL regulations.
Other charges may apply for the code-share flights operated by other carrier.

Furthermore, if each piece exceed 23 kg (50 lbs.) but no more than 32 kg (70 lbs.), an extra charge applies JPY5,000 or USD50.00 per piece. (excluding the flights to/from Brazil)

2. Flights to and from places other than USA (including Guam), Canada, Mexico or Brazil

Checked baggage weighing in excess of the free baggage allowance shall be charged at a rate per kilogram equivalent to 1.5% of the highest normal direct adult one-way economy class fare in effect on the date of issuance of an excess baggage ticket. (If there are two types of normal fares for Japan departure, the higher fare shall apply.)

Method of calculation:
Excess baggage charge = Normal economy class fare between boarding points (adult one-way) x 1.5% x excess baggage weight (kg)
(Rounded up to the nearest hundred yen)

Bulky Baggage, Musical Instruments

Please contact JAL reservation or a JAL travel agent in advance if your baggage exceed the following size:
Items that exceed 120cm (47 in.) (*) or total linear dimensions exceeding 203cm (80 in.).
Items that weigh more than 32kg (70 lbs.).
Large musical instruments such as cello, contrabass and etc.
Also, if you do not contact us, we may not accept your bulky baggage.

London, Dubai, Australia and New Zealand routes

Checked baggage exceeding 32kg(70lbs.) for 1piece cannot be accepted in principle. Please either divide them to be less than 32kg(70lbs.) or contact JAL office/travel agency for further information in advance.

It is prohibited by law to carry dangerous goods into the cabin or to include them in your checked baggage.

Excess Liability Charge

There is a limit to a Carrier’s liability for checked baggage. Passengers may pay the prescribed excess value charge for valuable items at the time of check-in to raise the limit of liability to the declared amount up to US$2,500.

Baggage Limits, Etc.

Items Prohibited for Carry-on

It is prohibited to carry any item that could be used as a weapon into the cabin. Carrying a knife or other restricted item into the cabin is a violation of Japan's Aviation Law and subject to a fine of up to 500,000 yen. If you are found to be carrying such items at a security check when departing from the US or another country outside of Japan, you may be subject to fines under the laws of that country. The following items cannot be carried onto aircraft and should be placed in checked baggage beforehand: knives, blunt and/or heavy items that could be used as a weapon, sharply pointed items, and any other items that could be used as a weapon.

Examples of Dangerous Goods

Expensive Items, Valuables and Fragile Articles

The items listed below should be carried with you and not included in your checked baggage.

Expensive items: Cash, jewelry, precious metals, securities, bills of exchange, works of art and antiques.
Valuables: Documents, electronic data, passports and other personal identification required for travel, samples, credit/bank cards, cash vouchers, bankbooks, checks, commuter passes, keys, computers and computer accessories, mobile phones, film cameras, digital cameras, video cameras, medication, paintings, watches, mementos, etc.

JAL will not be liable for any damage to fragile articles such as musical instruments, sports equipment (including golf club, surfboard, windsurfing equipment, diving equipment, bicycle, etc.), ceramics, glass articles and liquors, if the damage result from the inherent defect, quality or vice of the item, although adequate precautions will be taken in their handling.
JAL also does not assume liability for the following damage to baggage, although adequate precautions will be taken in their handling.

About damage and nonarrival of the Baggage

Damage to Check-In Baggage

In the event that your check-in baggage is damaged, please notify local airport staff when you claim your baggage. JAL is not liable for damage to check-in baggage, unless the carrier is clearly at fault for the damage.

Baggage Tracing Service

To help when the baggage that you checked in at the departure airport fails to return to you at the arrival airport, JAL has introduced a baggage tracing service that lets you check on the status of the baggage yourself.
