Involuntary reservation changes and ticket refunds

For request of reservation change or ticket refund due to involuntary reasons*1 such as flight delay or cancellation, please contact JAL call center or ticketing counter (city/airport). For the JAL Group flights in *2 below, JAL handles as follows.

  • *1Involuntary reasons:
    • Force majeure such as typhoon, snow, earthquake, airport closure and aircraft change due to force majeure.
    • Aircraft change due to JAL's reason
    • JAL aircraft maintenance
  • *2JAL Group flights:
    International flights: Japan Airlines (JL) flights
    Domestic flights: Japan Airlines (JL) and Japan Transocean Air (NU) flights (included in international tickets)

Involuntary reservation changes

Reservation change

Reservation change refers to changing flight within the same sector.
(Example: JL043 flight on January 15 from Tokyo Haneda to London is canceled due to heavy snow, and is changed to JL043 flight on January 16 from Tokyo Haneda to London.)

Eligible tickets

  • Japan Airlines international tickets (131 for the first three digits of ticket number) with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.
  • Other airlines' international flight tickets with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.

How change is made

  • Reservation shall be changed to JAL Group flights with available seats.
  • Change to non-JAL Group flights is only possible for fares that permit reservation change to other airlines.
    • *However, for reasons that are specified by JAL such as aircraft maintenance, change to the other airlines' flights are possible.
  • If fare, charge or tax become higher as the result of change of reserved flight, the difference will not be charged.

Route change

Route change refers to changing flight to a different route from the original reserved flights in the ticket.
(Example: JL043 flight on March 1 from Tokyo Haneda to London is canceled due to equipment failure, and is changed to JL045 and BA327 flights on March 1 from Tokyo Haneda to London via Paris.)

Tickets eligible for change

  • Japan Airlines international flight tickets (131 for the first three digits of ticket number) with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.
  • Other airlines' international flight tickets with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.

How to change

  • Route change shall apply for the same destination as the original JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled, and to JAL Group flights or non-JAL Group flights*1 with available seats.
    • *1Route change including non-JAL Group flights
      Change to non-JAL Group flights is only possible for fares that permit reservation change to other airlines.
      • *However, for reasons that are specified by JAL such as aircraft maintenance, change to the other airlines' flights are possible.

Involuntary ticket refunds

If you wish to cancel a trip due to the delay or cancellation of JAL Group flights, we will refund the unused segment of your ticket.

Tickets eligible for refund

  • Japan Airlines international tickets (131 for the first three digits of ticket number) with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.
    • *If the ticket was issued by other airline, please contact the airline for the refund.

  • *1If the ticket was paid with a restricted currency, refund outside the country of ticket purchase may not be possible.

Refund application period

Refund requests are accepted within one year and 30 days from the commencement date of travel (or the issue date if the ticket is totally unused).
However, for ticket with validity shorter than one year, refund requests are accepted within one year and 30 days from the issue date of the ticket.

Necessary documents

  • e-ticket itinerary/receipt
  • Please contact above locations for refund application as other documents may be necessary.

Refund amount

Before commencement of travel: total amount paid will be refunded, including the fare, charges and taxes.

After commencement of travel: the higher amount of the following 1 or 2 will be refunded.

  1. The applicable fare, charges and taxes for the unused sector.
    • *In case of traveling with discount fare, the refund amount will be calculated based on the same rate of discount.
  2. The difference between the total amount paid (including the fare, charges and taxes) and the applicable fare, fees and taxes of the actual onboarded sector.

(Note) Ticketing Service Fee (if included in the ticket) can be refunded only before the commencement of travel and in instances of delays or cancellations of JAL Group flights.

Ticketing Service Fee/Ticket Service Fee may not be refunded.

Cancellation charge

No charges for refund will apply.
