Involuntary reservation changes and ticket refunds

For request of reservation change or ticket refund due to involuntary reasons*1 such as flight delay or cancellation, please contact JAL call center or city/airport counter.
Change/refund can be made on the JAL website for some bookings.

Involutary change/refund handlings for the JAL Group flights*2 are explained on this page as follows.

  • *1Involuntary reasons:
    • Force majeure such as typhoon, snow, earthquake, airport closure and aircraft change due to force majeure.
    • Aircraft change due to JAL's reason
    • JAL aircraft maintenance
  • *2JAL Group flights:
    International flights: Japan Airlines (JL) flights
    Domestic flights: Japan Airlines (JL) and Japan Transocean Air (NU) flights (included in international tickets)

Involuntary reservation changes

Reservation change

Reservation change refers to changing flight within the same sector.
(Example: JL043 flight on January 15 from Tokyo Haneda to London is canceled due to heavy snow, and is changed to JL043 flight on January 16 from Tokyo Haneda to London.)

Eligible tickets

  • JAL international tickets (ticket numbers that begin with 131*) with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.
    • *Domestic tickets that begin with 131-14 131-875~9 are excluded.
  • Other airlines' international flight tickets with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.

How change is made

  • Reservation shall be changed to JAL Group flights with available seats.
  • With regard to change to non-JAL Group flights, change to other airlines' flights or itineraries including other airlines are possible when it is specifically permitted by JAL.
  • If fare, charge or tax become higher as the result of change of reserved flight, the difference will not be charged.

Route change

Route change refers to changing flight to a different route from the original reserved flights in the ticket.
(Example: JL043 flight on March 1 from Tokyo Haneda to London is canceled due to equipment failure, and is changed to JL045 and BA327 flights on March 1 from Tokyo Haneda to London via Paris.)

  • JAL international flight tickets (ticket numbers that begin with 131*) with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.
    • *Domestic tickets that begin with 131-14 131-875~9 are excluded.
  • Other airlines' international flight tickets with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.

How to change

  • Route change shall apply for the same destination as the original JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled, and to JAL Group flights or non-JAL Group flights*1 with available seats.
    • *1Change to other airlines' flights or itineraries including other airlines are possible when it is specifically permitted by JAL.

Involuntary ticket refunds

If you wish to cancel a trip due to the delay or cancellation of JAL Group flights, we will refund the unused segment of your ticket.

Tickets eligible for refund

  • JAL international tickets (ticket numbers that begin with 131*) with a reserved JAL Group flight that has been delayed or cancelled.
    • *Domestic tickets that begin with 131-14 131-875~9 are excluded.
    • *If the ticket was issued by other airline, please contact the airline for the refund.

Refund application period

Before commencement of travel: within one year and 30 days from the issue date*1 of the ticket

After commencement of travel: within one year and 30 days from the date of travel commencement

  • *1When the first sector of the ticket has been changed, within one year and 30 days from the date of change (reissue date)

Refund amount

Before commencement of travel: total amount paid will be refunded, including the fare, charges and taxes.

After commencement of travel: the higher amount of the following 1 or 2 will be refunded.

  1. The applicable fare, charges and taxes for the unused sector.
    • *In case of traveling with discount fare, the refund amount will be calculated based on the same rate of discount.
  2. The difference between the total amount paid (including the fare, charges and taxes) and The difference between the paid fare and the fare applicable to the sectors onboard, along with charges and taxes of the sectors not boarded.

(Note) Ticket Service Fee is not refundable.

Cancellation charge

No charges for refund will apply.
