Onboard Shipping Environments
While JAL takes every precaution to provide a safe, pleasant in-flight experience each time we ship a pet, the stress of flying can adversely affect animals in several ways. Therefore before shipping your pet with us (or any other airline), please understand the distress the animal may feel when separated from you during the flight.
-
Temperature and Humidity
In summer, heat radiates off the tarmac making temperatures inside the aircraft far hotter than they are outdoors during loading and unloading. When pets are suddenly exposed to unexpected changes in temperature and humidity levels upon arrival, they may feel discomfort. Cold winter temperatures are also very harsh on animals.
-
Lighting (Brightness)
All lights in our cargo compartments are turned off during a flight.
-
Noise
Pets in the cargo compartment may be disturbed by wind and mechanical noises during take-off, flight and landing.
-
Pressure
Air pressure in our cargo compartments is about 0.8 atmospheres during a flight. This is roughly the same pressure as you would feel standing atop a 2,000m high mountain peak. Changes in pressure during aircraft ascents and descents may temporarily affect your pet’s sense of hearing.
Important Information for Pet Owners
- We will do everything possible to keep your pet indoors or in the shade on the ground and safe and comfortable in flight. During the hotter summer months, it is recommended that you ship your pet during the cooler hours in the morning or evening in order to avoid the midday heat.
- Japan's mid-July to mid-September summer months can be hot and humid. Please be sure small cats and dogs drink plenty of water before the flight to avoid possible dehydration. Harsh winter months are also hard on animals. This is especially true of puppies, snub-nosed and elderly dogs. When shipping your pet, please be sure to take into consideration the flight time and the time of take off and landing.
- If your pet suffers from any of the following ailments, it is recommended you consult a veterinarian prior to shipping to ensure the animals safety:
- Breathing disorders or cannot regulate body temperature well
- Lack of appetite or diarrhea immediately after a previous flight
- Illness or any other condition that is not suited for flying (e.g. animals that are heavily stressed when separated from their owners or by being placed in dark places)
- Please be advised that pets being air freighted may become unexpectedly ill, frail or even die.
